Gyro Loaf - 2c
a2, europe, greek, lamb, pork
sandwiches
1 lb lean ground beef
1 lb lean ground lamb
1 sm onion; grated
4 cloves garlic; pressed
2 tsp oregano
1 tsp marjoram
1 tsp thyme
1 tbsp fresh ground black pepper
3/4 tsp salt
---- Tatziki Yogurt Sauce ----
1 c plain low-fat yogurt
1/4 c cucumber; grated
1/4 c onion; grated
1 tsp olive oil
garlic powder
Combine meat thoroughly with seasonings. Allow to "marinate" several hours,
or overnight if possible. Shape meat into a flattened loaf and broil,
turning until a thermometer inserted in the middle reads 155 F. Let rest
for 10 minutes before slicing as thinly as possible. Assemble each sandwich
by placing a few slices of meat into a pita, add a few thinly sliced onion
rings, chopped tomato and drizzle on some of the sauce. Serve with plenty
of napkins. For the sauce: Combine the five ingredients and set aside to
develop the flavors.
A great recipe for Gyros! It's a loaf, so you can slice it similar to the
ones at the restaurants.
